Napoleon outline

After the French Revolution the monarcy was dispanded

1795 – fear of French revolution Prussia made peace with France, and Spain allied with France, Britain pulled out its troops

1799- Napoleon took control of France when he overthrew the current government called the Directory

He called the new Government the Consulate

Napoleon claimed he only wanted piece

France which had been in an ongoing battle with Austria , fought them on June 1800 in the battle of Marengo-staggering victory

1799-During the Egyptian campaign in which Admiral Nelson’s British fleet demolishe the French fleet in the battle of the Nile.

1801- Austrians signed the Treaty of Luneville

1802 Britain and France signed the Peace of Amiens which briefly brought peace to Europe.

Napoleon was not so loved by the people in 1800 on Christmas Eve he was almost killed with a bomb- was made by the Royalists (wanted a monarchy)

1801- Made peace with the Catholic church , made Catholicism the church of France

Napoleon also during this time wanted to establish that government power could apply to everyone

1802 Napoleon was made Consult for Life

1802-1803 there was peace

1803 Louisiana purchase for 80 million francs or 15 million dollars

1804 Napoleon reffered to himself as the French Emperor. He also became Emperor of the Italian Republic and Conderation of Switzerland, also in cahoots with The Roman Empire

1805- Austria Allies with Britain and Alexander 1 of Russia joined with British.

1805 Napoleon was preparing to attack England. French forces on English Channel Heavily defended by Nelsons Fleet, Navy more powerful then army. Luckily Russian and Austrian army was marching on France

October 21st 1805- The British fleet decimated Napoleon’s fleet at the batlle of Trafalgar- solidifying seat strength

December 2nd Napoleon smashed the Russian Austria allianace – where Russia retreated to Poland and Austria signed the Treaty of Pressburg which gave Napoleon more of Italy

1806- Napoleon replaced the Holy Roman Empire with Confederation of the Rhine, .

1806- Prussia became worried and went up against Napoleon without allies, which lead Napoleon to control western Prussia, including Berlin

1807- Napoleon and Russia made a treaty- due to the fear of Napoleon taking Russia

To secure empire Napoleon would have to defeat Britain. Decided to wage economic war. A plan called the Continetal System, British goods would be restricted from entering Europe. Remember how much control Napoleon has in Europe. – Russians, Austrians, and Prussians to cooperate

Wanted to destroy the british Navy and give France a chance to build its own manufacturing and industry

Began in 1806- but luckily the traders were smart and were able to get neutral vessels to take goods.

Another decree in December 1807 the Milan which stopped against smuggling- stop british goods

British used sea power- weren’t allowed to dock british ships,France wouldn’t be allowed to use british ocean

The Continental system hurt France more

1807 Russia, Prussia, and Austria had officially declared war on Britain.

Britain tried to get Denamrk to keep ports opened, but that made them more willing to cooperate with Napoleon

Took Portugal,

Tried to take Spain, but the Spanish fought back and Wellington sent troops to help Guerilla Army which damaged France a bit, and gave Germany and Austria hope

Napoleon wanted to create a Grand Duchy of Warsaw- which would give him ultimate power over his allies and the countries he had taken over.

‘April of 1809 Austria rebelled a war of liberation they called it- defeated at Battle of Wagram and

1809: Napoleon turned 40 and had no heir

1811 Napoleon had a son Napoleon 2 King of Rome was name. – annulled Josephine cause of age and married Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria

1810-1811 had all of Europe except Balkans- alliances with Austria, Russia, Denmark, Sweden, and a small Prussia – all of Europe was at war with Britain

Made family rulers of Europe

Napoleon takeover strategy:

1) Army take over

2) Powerful influence on the government while drafted a constitution

3) Make someone a ruler, or keep the ruler under new constituteion

4) Numerous reforms and spreading the ideas of revolution throughout Europe

Resentment started occurring because of the British blockade: burdens of the Continetal system, high taxes outside fo France, and Napoleons conquest of Europe

Germany didn’t like Napoleon – anti-French through art and more

Romanticism-challenged French Rationailsih

Prussia:1806 after defeat started making changes in small part they had that were similar to Napoleons- more modern Prussia

December 31. 1810 Czar Alexander 1 withdrew from the Continental system and began trading with Britain

Sent 600,00 troops to Russia- Grand Army

Waited on Russian border in cold- moved army into Russia in 1812- Russia burning and destroying countryside that they left behind.

September Battle of Borodino The Grand Army won a victory against Russia

As France took hold- the Russia winter took hold early- winter of 1812 was bad- Napoleon tried to negotiate, but Alexander refused

December 1812 made new army after severe loss in Russia

1813 Austria and Prussia joined Russia and many Gemans

1813 Wellingrton threatened France from position in Spain

October 1813 Napoleon lost the Battle of Nations

April 4 1814 abdicated treaty of Fontainebbleau which would make Louis 18th king of france

May 30 1814 Napoleon was exiled to isle of Elba

May 1 1815 Napoleon made a return to Franc and Louis the 18th quickly fled , made a attempt at conquest called a hundred days

The hundred days ended at the battle of waterloo- Britain and Prussia – defeat Napoleon- Wellington won

The treaty of Paris was signed and Napoleon was exiled to Saint Helena in the South Atlantic last six years of life
